"Honey" Garlic Crispy Tofu

Yield: 18 Servings Prep Time: 25 Minutes Cook Time: 15 Minutes

Full Time: 40 Minutes

Perfectly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside with a "Honey" garlic flavoured sauce you love so much!

Ingredients:

- 1 block of tofu – pressed and drained

- ½ cup vegetable oil for frying

Batter

- 1 cup flour

- 1 tablespoon cornstarch

- ¾ cup plant-based milk (I used oat milk)

- 1 ½ teaspoon apple cider vinegar

Bread Crumb Mixture

- 1 cup vegan breadcrumbs (I recommend Panko bread crumbs)

- 1 tablespoon nutritional yeast

- 1 teaspoon onion powder

- 1 tablespoon garlic powder

- ½ tablespoon paprika

- ½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

- 1 teaspoon salt

"Honey" Garlic Sauce

- 1 ½ cup agave syrup

- 2 garlic cloves, minced

- 1 teaspoon salt (or more for taste)

Instructions:

1. Wrap your tofu in paper towel or towelette and press the tofu until most of the moisture is gone. You can do this by pressing with something heavy in the kitchen. I usually press mine overnight, but you can press for about 2-3 hours needed.

2. Cut your pressed tofu into strips of desired size.

3. Make your milk mixture: In a bowl, combine plant-based milk and apple cider vinegar, set aside for a few minutes to curdle.

4. Make your flour mixture: In a second bowl, combine the flour and cornstarch.

5. Make your breadcrumb mixture: In a third bowl, combine breadcrumbs, nutritional yeast, onion powder, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper and salt.

6. Taking one of your tofu strips, first coat in the flour mixture, then in the milk mixture, back in the flour mixture, again in the milk mixture, and finally in the breadcrumb mixture. Make sure to fully coat in each step. Complete with the rest of your tofu.

7. In a small pot, heat ½ cup vegetable oil on medium-high. Carefully drop tofu in oil, and fry until golden brown, turning as needed, about 1 ½ - 2 minutes each side. Allow to cool on paper towel after cooking, to soak up the excess oil. Alternatively, you can bake in the oven at 400F for 25-30 minutes turning halfway.

8. While cooking the tofu, make the “Honey” Garlic Sauce by combining agave syrup, garlic, and salt in a small pot. Heat on stove (medium/medium-high) for about 10 minutes until the garlic is thoroughly infused in the agave.

9. Plate and enjoy!
